If you have never heard of Extremadura, keep reading!
This captivating region, found at the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, borders Portugal to the west, Andalusia to the south, Castilla y León to the north, and Castilla-La Mancha to the east. Often overlooked by foreign travellers, Extremadura is one of Spain’s best-kept secrets, offering a perfect mix of unspoiled natural beauty and rich historical sites, each more surprising than the last. From Roman remains to National Parks and Catholic sanctuaries, Extremadura promises a wealth of discoveries.
Fair warning: avoid it in summer! The intense heat can be overwhelming, but the spring and autumn months are ideal for exploring.
What makes Extremadura truly unique is its diversity from north to south. In the south, the region blends with Andalusia’s whitewashed villages and rolling hills, with Zafra sometimes called the “small Sevilla” for its resemblance to the Andalusian capital, especially with its narrow streets, charming squares, and Moorish influences.
In the north, however, the landscape takes on a completely different character. Here, you’ll find the Duero River, along with breathtaking mountains and National Parks like Monfragüe and Sierra de Gredos. This part of Extremadura is lush, green, and full of water—offering a wild, untamed beauty that contrasts sharply with the southern regions. It’s a haven for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone in search of unspoiled, natural landscapes.

East of Cáceres lie Trujillo and Guadalupe. Trujillo is a stunningly well-preserved medieval city, steeped in history and closely linked to the early Spanish conquest of the Americas. Guadalupe’s sanctuary is the origin of the Virgin of Guadalupe’s worship across Latin America, and its charming whitewashed streets make it a must-visit to connect Extremadura and Spanish history with Latin American history.
Other notable towns include Zafra, a “small Seville” full of Andalusian colours and character, and Badajoz, near the Portuguese border. While Badajoz has an industrial reputation, its city centre and Alcazaba are worth exploring.

Mérida is home to some of the most remarkable Roman ruins in the Iberian Peninsula. Founded in 25 BC as Augusta Emerita, the Roman capital of Lusitania, it is now the capital of Extremadura. The jewel of the ensemble is the Roman Theatre, which hosts the “Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico” every summer. A performance is worth seeing, even if you don’t understand a word!
Other Roman treasures include the amphitheatre, the Roman circus and the impressive Roman bridge over the Guadiana River, which is one of the longest Roman-built bridges — they were truly extraordinary engineers! Not to miss are the Arco de Trajano, the Templo de Diana, the Casa del Mitreo and the Milagros Aqueduct.
Mérida has over 2,000 years of history, creating a fascinating historical contrast. During the 9th century, when Islamic Al-Andalus expanded, the incredible Alcazaba complex was constructed, adding yet another layer to the city’s rich heritage.

Famous for its pimentón (sweet paprika), the La Vera region is framed by the Sierra de Tormantos and Gredos mountains. It offers beautiful hikes, scenic strolls and excellent gastronomy. Plasencia’s vibrant old town is one of its main attractions and an ideal place to stay when exploring northern Extremadura.
Cáceres is a monumental city with one of Europe’s finest walls around it. Its 16th-century defensive walls, stork nests, gargoyles, and towers still stand proud. The Concathedral de Santa María dominates the cobbled historic centre, and climbing the Tower of Bujaco rewards you with spectacular views.

Extremadura is home to the Monfragüe National Park, where you can spot black storks and black vultures, among the other 75% of Spain’s protected species that live here.
The Tajo River flows through this stunning, diverse landscape, offering a perfect escape for those wanting to immerse themselves in natural beauty. Come here to get lost and find yourself surrounded by nature!
