Antoni Gaudí was a visionary unlike any other architect. A true genius of his time, his creations from the turn of the 20th century remain timeless—works that continue to amaze, surprise, and leave generation after generation utterly speechless. Controversial both during and after his lifetime, Gaudí’s masterpieces are an essential part of any visit to Barcelona.
Visiting Barcelona means discovering the major architectural works of Antoni Gaudí, who lived in the city throughout his adult life and left here his most iconic creations. One could spend days exploring Gaudí’s world; however, with this Essential Gaudí Walking Tour, we begin with two very significant works, accompanied by an expert guide: Casa Milà (La Pedrera) and the Basilica of the Sagrada Família.
Casa Milà (La Pedrera)
La Pedrera is the popular name for the residential building officially known as Casa Milà. Every shape of this structure breathes inspiration from nature, offering a perfect gateway into Gaudí’s creative universe. The visit includes the two interior courtyards, one apartment furnished with original 19th and 20th century pieces, and the attic with its distinctive catenary arches, one of Gaudí’s signature structural solutions. The tour concludes on the impressive rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy sweeping views over Barcelona: from Tibidabo to Montjuïc, the Mediterranean Sea, and the towers of the Sagrada Família.
Basilica and Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Família
Under construction since 1882, the Sagrada Família is unquestionably a one-of-a-kind building and fully merits a dedicated visit discovering the genius of the Catalan architect.
The Sagrada Família is a spectacular masterpiece of architecture and engineering, with a captivating beauty that defies description. It is essential to experience both the exterior and the breathtaking interior of this world-famous basilica. Construction has continued for more than a century, interrupted only by the Spanish Civil War and, more recently, the Covid-19 crisis. Gaudí deliberately left the project unfinished so that future architects, sculptors, and engineers could carry on his vision. Since then, artists from across the world have contributed to completing this extraordinary monument.
