Bilbao — affectionately known as Bilbo or El Botxo — is a city that has transformed itself from an industrial hub into a modern cultural capital. On this walking tour, you will explore the historic Old Town, stroll along the scenic Nervión River, and experience the avant-garde architecture and world-renowned art of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
The Old Town
Begin your journey in the heart of the Old Town, where narrow cobblestone streets lead to vibrant taverns, bustling markets, and centuries-old landmarks. You will encounter the impressive Mercado de la Ribera, the elegant Plaza Nueva, the neo-baroque Arriaga Theatre, the 14th-century Gothic Bilbao Cathedral, and the Baroque Church of San Nicolás. As you wander, your guide will share stories of Bilbao’s industrial past and its cultural revival, giving context to the city’s fascinating transformation.
Contemporary architecture
Continuing along the Nervión River, discover Bilbao’s contemporary architectural achievements. Cross the striking Zubizuri Bridge by Santiago Calatrava, admire the soaring Iberdrola Tower by César Pelli, and view the elegant Euskalduna Concert Hall designed by Arata Isozaki. Public art punctuates the riverfront, from Jeff Koons’ playful Puppy to Louise Bourgeois’ monumental spider Maman, as well as vibrant graffiti on the La Salve Bridge, all reflecting the city’s dynamic urban identity.
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
The tour culminates at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, a masterpiece by Frank Gehry. This iconic building, with its sweeping curves and innovative design, is as captivating as the contemporary artworks it houses. Explore both the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions while appreciating the museum’s architectural brilliance, which has become a symbol of Bilbao’s cultural renaissance.
