Step into the heart of Madrid’s literary history on this captivating tour of the Barrio de las Letras, the neighborhood where some of Spain’s greatest writers lived and worked.
Miguel de Cervantes and Don Quixote
Miguel de Cervantes spent his final years in this neighbourhood. Between the end of 16th and early 17th centuries, during the height of the Spanish Empire, Cervantes led a life full of adventures—soldier, prisoner of the Turks, tax collector, and even a supposed spy for King Philip II. Yet his greatest legacy was the creation of Don Quijote de La Mancha, the dreamer who mistook windmills for giants and millers for princesses. We have all been a Quixote at some point in our lives!
During the guided walk, follow in the footsteps of Cervantes and other literary legends like Lope de Vega and Quevedo. Discover charming shops, quaint cafés, and hidden corners of the neighborhood. Those with a sweet tooth can indulge in what is considered one of the best chocolate cakes in the world. Don’t miss the golden plates embedded in the streets, where some of the most beautiful words ever written in Spanish are immortalized—a truly enchanting detail of this unique literary quarter.
