Tailor-made excursions and experiences in Costa Brava and Girona

0

Girona and the Costa Brava are great places to spend a few days away from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona. The Costa Brava stretches along more than 100 kilometres of deep green and blue Mediterranean coastline. Inland, the province of Girona offers a diverse array of landscapes, ranging from the high peaks of the Pyrenees to peaceful rural flatlands and beautifully preserved medieval villages.

Read on for our curated selection of destinations and experiences, most of which can be comfortably enjoyed from Girona with a private, chauffeur-driven vehicle.

From the natural landscapes of Cap de Creus Natural Park to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Nature Reserve—an outstanding bird sanctuary in the Gulf of Roses—and, for hiking enthusiasts, the Camins de Ronda offer gentle, scenic coastal paths that lead to the most hidden gems of this rugged coastline.

One of our most cherished locations—and a site we wholeheartedly recommend—is the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, an abandoned Romanesque treasure perched high on a hilltop with breathtaking views across the Mediterranean. Combine this with a visit to the charming seaside town of El Port de la Selva for an unforgettable cultural and scenic experience.

Travellers with a special interest in Jewish heritage will appreciate the village of Besalú, about an hour from Girona. This beautifully preserved medieval town is home to one of Spain’s best conserved mikvahs, alongside striking civil and religious architecture such as its iconic bridge.

The region is also renowned for its world-class cuisine, home to celebrated restaurants and Michelin-starred chefs, making the Costa Brava a true paradise for discerning food lovers.

The Costa Brava also delights with its idyllic seaside villages. Explore the picture-postcard coves of Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc, admire panoramic views from the Sant Sebastià Lighthouse or the gardens of Cap Roig, and wander through the historic fishing town of Tossa de Mar, where an enchanting walled medieval quarter overlooks the sea.

Tailor-Made Ideas:
L’Escala & Empúries Archaeological Site

L’Escala & Empúries Archaeological Site: Day Excursion

Discover the ancient Greek colony of Emporion, Spain’s only archaeological museum and site of its kind, dating back to 600 BC. Explore the well-preserved remains, including mosaics, Roman walls, and the iconic Hellenistic sculpture of Asclepius. Visit the medieval town of Sant Martí d’Empúries for a relaxed lunch with stunning ocean views, then stroll through the charming fishing village of L’Escala, ending with a seaside walk and gelato by Roses Bay.

Please note: This tour is not recommended for July and August. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Lunch reservations can be arranged upon request.

Costa Brava: Mediaeval villages and a sample of Camí de Ronda

Delve into the heart of Costa Brava’s rural landscapes with a journey through the picturesque region of l’Empordà. Stroll through the quaint, stone-carved village of Peratallada, before climbing the bell tower in Palau-Sator for panoramic views. Enjoy a gourmet lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a leisurely 30-minute walk along the famed Camí de Ronda trail, linking the charming coastal villages of Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc.

Visit to the Theatre-Museum Dalí, in Figueres (from Girona)

Immerse yourself in the world’s largest surrealist artwork. Located in Dalí’s hometown of Figueres, this iconic building, once a theatre, was transformed by the eccentric Catalan artist into a museum that encapsulates his delirious genius. Expect an experience far beyond the typical art museum visit—this is a journey into the mind of a true visionary.

Dalí Full Day Excursion: Theatre-Museum and Portlligat House

Begin your day with a scenic 30-minute drive from Girona to Figueres, Dalí’s birthplace. Explore the Theatre-Museum Dalí for approximately two hours, marvelling at the surrealist masterpieces. Continue to the enchanting seaside town of Cadaqués (a one-hour drive along a winding coastal road) for a gourmet lunch and a taste of the stunning Costa Brava. After dining, venture to Portlligat, where Dalí’s private home awaits in a serene bay surrounded by the natural beauty of Cap de Creus National Park.

Please note: This excursion is not available on Mondays and is also unavailable from June to August.

Teatre-Museu Dalí & Peralada Wine Experience

Enjoy a leisurely 30-minute drive north of Girona to Figueres, where you will discover the Theatre-Museum Dalí. After your two-hour visit, head to the medieval town of Peralada for a gourmet lunch. The experience culminates with a visit to the newly established Peralada Winery, where you’ll indulge in an exclusive wine tasting, savouring the finest local vintages.

Please note: This tour is not recommended for July and August. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Lunch reservations can be arranged upon request.
